Developing a Master Plan for the Master Plan

A well-developed and thorough Master Plan is the key to a strong and viable Dual Immersion Program at all grade levels. This session will overview the process for developing a comprehensive Dual Immersion Master Plan. Presenters will share steps to take from the first discussion with the Superintendent to the presentation of the completed Master Plan to the Board of Directors. Participants will leave the session with information and a variety of resources to guide them in the process of preparing a Master Plan for their Dual Immersion Program. It's never too early to start - Come join us and get to work on your Master Plan!

Elevating the Marginalized: Working Toward Inclusive Schools for ALL Students

This workshop will focus on traditionally marginalized students and how our schools and systems can work to create safe and inclusive spaces for ALL our students. There will be a focus on understanding the ways our systems inherently disenfranchise and alienate students and families, and what we can do (as administrators and teachers) to mitigate this marginalization. Participants will dig into ideas of power and privilege and identify next steps to create change in their schools (at the district, school, and classroom level).

Building and Developing Anti-Racist Dual Language Programs

Restrictive language policies in schools have a devastating impact on individuals and cultures. Among other policies and practices, they have perpetuated institutional racism in our schools and beyond. By bringing a language, in addition to English, into the center of educational experience, Dual Language programs have the potential to be a powerful anti-racist practice in our schools. However, unless carefully and intentionally designed with anti-racism in mind, Dual Language programs may a neutral impact on student outcomes, or even re-inforce patterns of privilege and oppression in schools. This session will provide an overview of this topic with relevant research, and engage participants in conversation to lead to action steps in building and developing anti-racist Dual Language programs.

Engaging Bilingual Students in a Culturally Relevant Curriculum

Have you ever been challenged by the difficulty of providing students a culturally relevant curriculum in a dual language program? This session offers educators an opportunity to investigate an innovative approach to curriculum development that rethinks traditional monolingual/monocultural perspectives. This approach provides empowering academic experiences that better meet the learning needs of dual language students. In this session, we will discuss the process of creating a collaborative curriculum that embeds literacy instructional practice across ELA and Social Studies courses. This reciprocal process reinforces literacy skills by leveraging relevant content goals in both ELA and Social Studies. The development of the curriculum is informed by social justice theory and pedagogy. Through the curriculum, students develop a strong academic identity and play an active role in the school and community using their knowledge leveraging their biliteracy, bilingualism, and multiculturalism.

Bringing GLAD to Middle and High School Classrooms

GLAD has been traditionally embraced at the elementary level. In Highline in the past three years there has been increased interest from middle and high school teachers who want to implement GLAD strategies in their classrooms across all content areas. Participants will learn how Highline has strategically promoted GLAD with middle and high school teachers and bilingual paraprofessionals. Participants will also see examples of how strategies are being implemented in content classrooms across the district and have time to identify and plan actionable steps in their own districts.

Engaging Secondary Learners with Sheltered Instruction

Sheltered Instruction is an approach which authentically integrates language and content learning. The dual goals of Sheltered Instruction are to provide access to mainstream, grade-level content, and to promote the development of academic English language proficiency for all learners. SIOP is an approach which presents a coherent, specific, field-tested model of sheltered instruction that specifies the features of a high quality sheltered lesson which teaches content material to English learners, and is proven to be beneficial for ALL learners.
